Mohini Ekadashi

Mohini Ekadashi falls in the Shukla Paksha of Vaisthe Hakha Month. This Ekadashi is dedicated to the Mohini incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The great story of Mohini Ekadashi can be seen in the Padma Purana. Once, King Yudhishtira asked Lord Krishna, “O Lord! In this world, every human will commit various sins, knowingly or unknowingly, every day. Due to those sins, he will gain Papa and suffer the consequences. What is the way out for those who realise their sins and want to transform themselves into good human beings?”

Listening to this question, Lord Krishna replied, “O king! You have asked a relevant question. The same question was asked by Lord Rama in Treta Yuga to Sage Vasishtha. Sage Vasishtha explained to Lord Rama the significance of observing Mohini Ekadashi Vrata. On this day, those who dedicate their mind, body, and soul to worship Lord Vishnu will never be caught by Maya (Delusion). They will be free from all sins and attain the abode of Vaikuntha. They will get rid of financial troubles and obtain an abundance of wealth. They will never suffer the pain of Samsara and lead a highly prosperous life.”

The Story of Lord Vishnu’s Mohini Form

When the powerful demon Bhasmasura, blessed with a deadly boon by Lord Shiva, turned against his own benefactor, it was Lord Vishnu who came to the rescue. Assuming the enchanting form of Mohini, Vishnu captivated Bhasmasura through graceful dance and charm. Lost in admiration, the demon imitated her every move—until he was tricked into placing his own hand on his head, thus reducing himself to ashes. In this way, Lord Vishnu saved Lord Shiva from grave danger.
